In these turbulent times many professionals are talking about emotional health. We have been shut in, closed off and frightened by a virus out of our control. Our normal has almost been forgotten. We try to exercise, eat well, get outside and connect on zoom and by phone but its been a different and difficult year and the results for many is an ebbing away of  emotional well being.

Yet, regardless of circumstances God is clear that His desire for us is for great emotional and physical health.

3 John 2 (AMPC)

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers.

God’s desire for us is to prosper which by definition means to flourish and grow strong and healthy. In this context it appears to be referring to our physical health. The author links our physical health to our soul, which is comprised of our minds, emotions and will.

Jesus came to bring us health in all areas of our lives. He brought us salvation. That word salvation in the greek is Sozo. The definition of sozo is to be saved, made whole, healed, preserved and made well.

God’s will for us is to be made well and healed in all areas including that of our emotions. Sometimes our soul is not in good shape and our all around health is ill effected. But we have a durable covenant that God is our healer and in Isaiah 61 God clearly tells us that Jesus was sent to save and restore us.

61 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent me to bind up and heal the brokenhearted….

God anointed Jesus to preach the good news to the poor. I know that this refers to the materially poor but it is also referring to those who are emotionally poor and those who have been emotionally afflicted. Jesus was sent to heal the brokenhearted. He wants to bring restoration to every broken area of our lives. Our broken spirits, our broken dreams, our broken self images and those places that have been damaged by words of condemnation and those words that inflicted pain and broke our hearts. . Lies believed, broken relationships, broken dreams. God does not intend for these to define us. He brought us truth to set us free.

There are two scriptures that capture most hearts.

The most popular verse in the bible is John 3:16.

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

After reviews of online searches the second most popular verse is Jeremiah 29:11 “ For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

What most people want is to know is that God loves them and that He has a plan for them! A plan full of hope, purpose and beauty and that changes everything. We matter! We matter to the one who made us. This is our reassurance regardless of the heartache we may feel today.

When we understand that we are his special treasure, his daily delight, we begin to feel loved and valued. We re-ignite a heart of hope. In Romans Paul assures us that there is a new kingdom that we now have access to where emotional health resides.

 Romans 14:17

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,

We know we are made right in God’s eyes the moment we make Jesus Lord. Peace, that absence of internal agitation. Joy: gladness of heart, happiness. These all are now available to us.

So the question is how do we find our emotional healing and health? There are many many ways but always the same healer, Jesus. I believe God uses others to minister deliverance if the enemy is involved and often times counselors or friends may be used but the power to heal is always the same, it is Jesus. He tells us to come to him.

Matthew 11:28

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]

He will do it. The word made flesh.

We have to come to Jesus on a regular basis. The word will heal us. Jesus will heal us. Face to face. Bring your pain and shame to Jesus because he is anointed to heal us. It is a journey but the promise is there and it is real, He is our healer.

Psalm 107:20

He sends forth His word and heals them and rescues them from the pit and destruction.

Come to Jesus and his word.

Hebrews 4:12 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

12 For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the [a]breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.

Proverbs 4:20-22(AMPC)

20 My son, attend to my words; consent and submit to my sayings.

21 Let them not depart from your sight; keep them in the center of your heart.

22 For they are life to those who find them, healing and health to all their flesh.

The reason this is a guaranteed path to healing is that the truth of God’ word will replace the lies and strongholds the enemy has used to keep us prisoners to brokenness. Come to Jesus, renew your minds. use your will to make an exchange and ask Him, the one who made and loves you to restore all the enemy has stolen. Jesus and His words bring life and healing and sustained health, in every area.
